My laptop has been acting a little strangely lately and I've found out that my install of AVG seems to have been as effective as the UK Border agency. Tried to uninstall it only to be told that I needed admin permissions to do so (I already had them) so I ended up having to get a removal tool from AVG to get rid of the bloody thing. Problem solved I hear you say...............err no.
Now the it has a tendency to freeze up when the progress bar appears during boot up and when it does boot the keyboard and touchpad don't work, there is no default gateway address stored so I can't get on t'interweb with it (yes I have tried ipconfig/release and renew) and it bluescreens within 3 minutes of logging into Vista.
Now you can see why ranting at stuff in the Mail is helping my blood pressure. lol:

When I finally get this thing back up and running again I'm using Avast from now on, I just have to remember to turn off the speech as "Bing Bing Bing, A THREAT HAS BEEN DETECTED" every couple of minutes was disconcerting when it was getting rid of what had been left in. noooo:

I did check in the local computer place, £60 to reinstall Vista. Knackers to that, time to check if any of the guys I know down here have the disk. noooo:

Do you have a recovery/restore partition, or can you create recovery cd(s)?

There is a partition on the hard disk but when I've tried using the recovery points I get a message saying the restore has failed as the point id damaged.

I have some OEM Vista CDs - I will sort out a copy.

What's the bastard fooking point in having a restore manager on a machine that needs the actual build specific OEM disk when they shove it onto a partition instead.

And before anyone says anything I was nice and police in my message to them (don't look so surprised you cheeky sods lol: )

Linux developers are nuts, looking through medibuntu's utility list when this came up lol:
Hot-babe is a small graphical utility which display the system activity in a very special way. When the CPU is idle, it displays a dressed girl, and when the activity goes up, as the temperature increases, the girl begins to undress, to finish totally naked when the system activity reaches 100%. Of course, if you can be shocked by nudity, don't use it!

If you dig back far enough you'll find this is an ongoing "project" that I toyed with for the boys but due to delivery problems I never got two raspberries when they first came out. like you I suspect that they may well end up as a five minute wonder in this house where even the best laptops seem not to be sufficient for the boys' needs.

If it does what it says on the tin (and so far it does)...
... it gives me a cheap (£30) PC with HD video (I'm connected via HDMI to a TV/Monitor) which can web browse, stream video from my file server and watch live TV using FilmOn...
What is there not to like...
Conversely, the ZX81 (I had an '80) cam out at a time when we all wanted 'a computer' but didn't really know what we wanted it for...
... and fresh from the box the ZX80 and 81 actually did very little...

2 quick questions BM, what OS does it run and how easy is it to sort out device drivers for it. Since the test bed laptops at the store were chucked out in the great clean up I've had to use my own to test any computer kit that we are donated so one of these could be a viable alternative.

I stuck "wheezy" on it (debian) to give it a try - worked first time... desktop is as per the picture I posted...
But you can also get Android for it....
I didn't spend long on it today as I was working off the mini keyboard but finding the pub, logging-in and posting was very fast...

Fooking laptop again. worked perfectly yesterday but when I booted it up today was told I had limited or no connectivity so no emails or t'interweb on it. Tried the usual fixes for the problem:
Windows Repair
ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Checked the state and manually stopped and restarted the DHCP client service and the RPC service
Disabled and then renabled the wireless network connection.
And the bloody thing is still telling me that no operation can be performed on the local area connection while its media is disconnected and that the IP is currently 0.0.0.0
My desktop pc connects, my xbox connects and so does my tablet.

It doesn't appear to be a bios issue as I can connect to the local wifi network I just can't access the internet because it won't get the IP address. I did check on google but their solutions are the ones I've already tried

The laptop came up with "The user Profile cannot be loaded" when I tried to log into my account. rubschin:
I got in via the admin account I have as a backup and noticed that AVG was saying that a restart was required to complete update. Restart completed, still couldn't get in on my account. I opened the admin account again and went into AVG and it was saying the same thing. Restarted 3 more times - same thing.
I opened in Safe Mode and restored it back to 09/04 and voila - sorted  I then manually updated AVG.
For some reason though, Firefox wouldn't work ("Couldn't Open XPCOM") so I used IE to install a new version.
All sorted.

Fuck me, I almost got brained by a low flying laptop earlier. It seems that some gormless student couldn't get their to work so in a tantrum they inadvertently launched it out of their window.
Needless to say, whatever was wrong with the laptop before, being launched from a second floor window onto the pavement has pretty much made it academic... happy002
