Title: Scratch to reveal your pin number
Post by: Miss Demeanour on January 22, 2012, 12:32:57 PM

You know when you get the separate letter with the pin number for your card etc and you have to first ...peel back the window to reveal the silver surface , then get a coin and scratch away at that to reveal a number that is so faint you are no nearer to knowing what it is   Banghead

Why is all that needed ?

Ok I understand you need to know if it has been tampered with in transit but surely by just opening the tab you can tell that  , why on earth do you then have to scratch away and why is it so faint that it is indistinguishable ? cussing:

Some banks have changed the system ~ Santander for example ask you to peel the strip and you can see nothing. However if you place the semi transparent peeled strip on a piece of white paper the number is on that.

Suggest you read all the instructions again. I spent two weeks scrubbing away with the edge of a coin trying to work out what my Santander PIN was and finally phoned and asked WTF? The explanation was as above.  redface:

Royal Bank of Scotland are switching to this system as are my main bank The Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.

Much it seems depends not so much on the bank but which card provider they use.

I followed the instructions and even read them before I ripped or scratched anything.

It is for a Barclaycard.

My eyesight is fine it is the process that is poor.

And my final point is if you have to tear the window why do you still  need to scratch to reveal.

You clear now !

Having to tear the window cover off is what makes me suspect that the PIN is actually on the window as explained above.
When I encountered this I could see a faint image on the seemingly scratchable bit beneath but couldn't read it so scratched away only eventually I had scratched right through the paper. Then I found that the tear off strip, if placed on white paper, clearly revealed the PIN  Banghead

Have you tried that? ...... Or like me did you rip the strip and bung it in the bin. I ended up with the bank explaining it all and having to send me a new PIN.  redface:

PS Woodstock tells me that with Nat West the strip has to be ripped off and the letter placed on white paper and the PIN appaers as if by magic.

PPS I hope it's not me you are huffy with ~ Only trying to help and am resisting all comment re your eyesight etc.

It was the end number I couldn't make out. Could only have been a couple of options really and having just been to the bank it was the second one I tried.

Have now changed it to what I want it to be

The reason I asked, Miss D, is that I found that coins with serrated edges do more damage to the already faint number. Snoopy's idea sounds good though. Oh, and there is an unnecessary "number" in the thread title :-).

I had the same situation  a week ago. Of all the technological advances this one always get overlooked.

Same scenario ...Peel window, scratch to see if you have won the lottery and can actually see the numbers!!!

Not a chance.  There is always 1 that is indistinguishable!!!

It is a con by the card making companies after 3 failed attempts and a replacement card is ordered  Banghead
