NO !! Lilly livered Liberals and the feckin human Rights bill have Fecked this country right up. It's now all ME ME ME.
Everybody is afraid to upset everybody else. The sooner a Government gets some bollocks and takes the Justice system and the HR bill by the scruff of the neck the better for everybody, but it will never happen and the country just spirals downwards and inwards, eventually to implode on itself. Happy New Year if that's what you want. noooo:

Worse still, the 'need' to prosecute the 'racist' killers of Stephen Lawrence has resulted in the removal of the Double Jeopardy law...
Which means in effect that if the plod get the 'wrong' verdict in a trial they can keep having another go until they get the 'right' one.... noooo:

But only for 29 specified crimes and then only after the appeal court has decided that the first verdict (not guilty) was wrong and where there is "compelling new evidence".
Not quite the blanket "carry on going to court until you get the verdict you want" that some would have us believe.

And you don't think that will change in time...?

Oh I cannot predict the future ~ if I could I wouldn't be in the bloody country today.
I do know that the original proposal was to limit the waiving of double jeopardy to only three crimes but the Government of the day allowed it to be greatly widened so you may well be right in suggesting that this is a pretty thick "thin end of the wedge" and we have probably opened a door that will be very hard to close.
On the same track I personally still have doubts that the right verdict has been reached even now but then I was not in court and have not seen/heard all the evidence. To me there is more than a touch of trying to shut the Daily Mail up about the whole thing together with the Met trying, perhaps too hard, to prove they are no longer racist. I do suspect that this is not the end of the matter and that campaigns to prove their innocence will now commence and run side by side with others, on both sides, seeking compo will run for years. My only prediction is that this is not the last we will hear of the whole sorry saga.
A good sort out of the Criminal Justice system in the UK is necessary but don't hold your breath..... there will, no doubt, be much more tinkering at the edges but no real rationalisation of the law or sentencing for many years yet.

The other thing that struck me today listening to the wireless is this concept of a 'Racist Murder'...
Surely murder is murder - when did the motive ever become relevant...? Shrugs:
Is Racist Murder worse than normal murder?
Is there ever likely to be a conviction for a black on white Racist Murder?
WTF is going on? noooo:

For that matter what about Black on Black. All Africans hate Nigerians. West Indians hate all Africans. Indian Hindus cannot abide Pakistani Muslims (and yet until 1947 they were all the same) and so it goes on. They each see the others as a different race. It goes beyond the mere "tribal".

Stephen Lawrences killers have only been bought to justice because of the hard work of his parents in keeping the story in the public eye.
There are plenty of racist murders that go unpunished because, in the main, the police don,t give a shit. They have been made to look really bad in this case and are now bending over backwards to get it right.
The police in this country are only after the easy nick or the speeding motorist and it takes a strong willed, grieving mother to show them up for what they really are.
-
Sometimes others put your words down better than you ever can yourself...
I don't know whether the 2 guys who stand convicted of the murder of Stephen Lawrence are guilty, I suspect they may be, however the lengths that the authorities had to go to to get a conviction strikes me as being very unsafe. First the law on double jeopardy had to be removed as the accused had already been tried once and found not guilty. Excuses had to be found for the poor storage of evidence meaning that cross contamination may have (not necessarily did) occur. The accused had already been named as "guilty" by the MSM in the shape of the Daily Mail. Plus there is now an ongoing campaign to try and get to the other 3 involved. A massive and costly undercover operation was set up by the police that looks from an outsiders point of view as entrapment yet the accused were finally only convicted on 16 fibres and a speck of blood.
I don't know if they were guilty, I do know that the appeals court and the lawyers are going to have a field day over this and when or if it goes up to the European Court of Justice which will sift the evidence and the trial procedures then I suspect the case might just be overturned and hefty compensation paid out.
What was done here to try and get a conviction had far more to do with political correctness and a desire not to appear racist. The murders of Charlene Downes and Gavin Hopley have already proven that you need to be the right skin colour to get this sort of response from the police, the government and various other political groupings.
So from my strictly jaundiced viewpoint, if this was justice, God help us all.

Exackly right. These guys WILL get off under appeal, no doubt about it. Political correctness gone wrong just about sums it up.
