Title: Any free registry cleaner recommendations?
Post by: GROWLER on December 06, 2011, 09:18:30 AM
This heap of junk has suddenly got horrendously slow over the last 24 hours, normally after it's been turned on for more than 45 minutes. Can take up to two minutes to load most if not all  sites now ffs. Banghead

I've been led to believe that the registry gubbins thingy wotsit whatever is possibly overloaded with half baked half installed, , incorrectly loaded and half deleted programmes, random files that aren't used anymore, old virus's etc etc., and eventually it gets all overloaded and gunged and makes it go all slow, yes? Shrugs:

I need a registry cleaner apparently. Is this so?
Not fussed on paying for one when there are apparently freebie ones out there that'll remove some of this crap, so a recommendation of a good un would be most appreciated.

A standard coconut is on offer as a reward for the most helpful personage.

But is it free though?
Most of these things I've tried in the past say'free download' blah blah blah, so you do it/install it, and then it scans and tells you they've found 5 megasquillion faults and will fix 3 of them for you for free, but if you want the rest doing, that'll be a thousand pounds please. Banghead
Can't remove most of this newly installed shite then either. cussing:

Anyway. Back to this thing/machine.

Do you think I've done ok, meaning that it's now nearly eight years old (Dell) and still seemingly mechanically running ok.
I thought 'puters were ususally supposed to go tits up after about 5-6 years? rubschin:

The hardware should go on forever...

What generally happens is that all the Windows Update shite slows them down until they become unusable....

What happens if you never update the windows shite ?  scared2:

The justification for most of it is to plug gaping security holes in their software...

So theoretically you are more vulnerable if you don't update....

I was refering more to the actual mechanical capabilities and reliabilty/longevity of the internal mechanical giblety type stuff that actually makes the whole thing werk rather than the Windows shite.

I only installed this OFFICIAL XP version late last year to replace the 'dodgy' <cough> copy/aquired one <cough> and am quite comfy with it tbh.

I also did ao hells 'one click fix' thing this morning too, which involved re-installing aol and its associated gubbins. Had to restart and type in all me passwerds again, and me favourites toolbar needs re-installing now too.
Everything seems to be werkin' at normal speed again now though.

I refer the right honourable gentleman to my previous answer...

The hardware should go on forever...

The bearings on the fans can wear out and hard drives are theoretically vulnerable (as they have moving parts) but TBH they tend to fail early or go on forever....

You have run Windows Update tho haven't you...?

Boots up fater - does everything faster...

And less energy too = less heat = less noisy and unreliable fans...

One day all 'disks' will be solid state...

Amazing to think that the first 'Hard Drive' I sold was 4Megabytes and you now have that much memory in your system... The 4M drive had to be 'partitioned' to appear to the system to be 4 8" floppy drives...

Now you can get a sixty-four gigabyte (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT064M4Solid-State-Drive2-Solid/dp/B004W2JKWG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323201684&sr=8-1) solid state drive for eighty five quid....  noooo:

EDIT The HP hard drive system was a 9135A (http://www.hpmuseum.net/display_item.php?hw=256) and it cost a mahoosive $5,500!  eeek:

How much are they...roughly like...ish?

Bin the fan then do you, 'cus this one does struggle when the ambient temp gets a bit sweaty like.?

No.

You'd have to find out how much space is used on your existing drive and buy a replacement SSD with suitable capavity.

Then you'd have to clone your existing drive to the new drive.

The new drive will be SATA and your old drive might not be so your PC may not have the capability to connect it.

And the fans in your system will also cool the CPU so you can't just remove them...

Overall, prolly not a good upgrade for a very old PC....  noooo:

The world would be so much better without us tis true.....in fact you should consider making this place a men only club, then you could be free to talk about whatever you want to without interruption, perspective or tolerance  rubschin:

One thing to avoid.

If you have an SSD installed don't ever ever de-frag it!

An who? confused:

Talk I.T numpty talk will you man! evil:

Sorry Growler, just a general comment.

Solid State DRIVE! not disk.

Still not proven technology and a large number have been prone to die, similar to the "the Click of Death" problem that Zip drives went through.
Not for your machine anyway.
Quick improvement is always more RAM, faster drive or faster chip. What's the model? Tag number?

S'ok mate. BM has explained  it all now anyways.

I'll have to get the owld users destructions out to find that other info out.
Never heard of a tag number before tbh. confused:

At least it seems to be working ok again now anyway.
Been a damned good machine (Dell)  this imo., especially when you consider the number of times I've twatted it in me rage too like.

Tag number is a 5 or 6 digit letter/number identification code that should be on the casing somewhere. Type it into the Dell support site and you get all the info you need for upgrades/drivers  etc. Also original config, date shipped etc.

Dell are the tops for this kind of info.

You can also get the number from the BISO settings (access at boot time) and sometimes by getting the Dell site to find it for you.
I do have some Dell bits and pieces that may or may not be useful.

Having looked at the original spec the only thing you can really do with this machine is to increase the RAM.
