Title: Foreign Drivers
Post by: bodiam on October 14, 2011, 07:19:57 PM
Feckin foreign drivers!!!!  Driving home from Heathrow Airport on Tuesday a German truck driver decided to pull out and pile into the side of my car forcing me across 3 lanes of motorway traffic. After I came to an eventual halt in the outside lane and managed to get to the hard shoulder- me and Mrs B, not the car- The lorry driver who had fortunately stopped, apologised and said he never saw me. In his hand he had all the documents he said I would need for my insurance company. It had obviously happened to him before yet his company had never invested in the type of wing mirror that would probably have prevented the accident.
The sooner these mirrors are made law for the left hand drive trucks the better, its only good luck I am here now and it could have been so easily avoided. The beaurocats in Europe are quick enough to pass the crazy laws. thatsit: angry037

This happened to LL on the M25...

The Polish driver admitted that he hadn't seen her and that it was his fault... the police admitted that it happened all the time as they didn't have the right mirrors to see overtaking cars before pulling out (they still wanted to breathalyse LL tho - their main concern - wankers)... We thought it would all be covered by insurance as he had admitted that it was his fault to the plod...

Not a chance - his insurance denied responsibility and we ended up picking up the repair bill...  cussing:

You only have to watch an episode of one of those Police stop action camera death programmes to realise how completely fucking useless the motorway plod are....  noooo:

We never saw the police, we ended up with the muppets from highways. They made sure we were ok?! dragged our car onto the hard shoulder and pissed off....leaving us standing beside the motorway for nearly an hour before recovery came. To our astonishment he said he never had authorisation from our insurance company to take us home only to get us off the motorway and leave us somewhere safe which happened to be an Esso garage in Leatherhead at 10 o'clock at night. WE then had to try and find a taxi to take us home which cost us £80. Best thing was, I paid extra on my policy to be taken home-or put up in a hotel. I am still waiting for the head honcho from their ''customer care'' department to phone me with why, wherefor and what they are going to do?   Car written off . cussing: cussing: cussing: cussing: Did I mention it was Direct Line? Wankah: Wankah: Wankah:

Glad you both escaped unscathed fellah.
Must have been pretty damned scary for you both, especially on such a busy motorway that the M25 is too.

The sooner these foreign drivers are only allowed into the country by customs AFTER they are satisfied that the correct mirrors are fitted, the better.
Shouldn't be that bloody hard to enforce surely? rubschin:

You can bet your life that British trucks aren't allowed off the ferry without them!  cussing:

Quite right, BM.
An old pal of mine runs a trucking company with150+ rigs all over Europe. There are constant spot checks. Never happens in the UK.

Bloody terrifying watching their antics on the unrestricted  two lanes (sometimes) autobahns in Geeeermany too. They just pull out and take 5 minutes to overtake another truck going 0.001 kph less than them. Saw a couple of extremelly fast moving beemers and mercs having to slam on for these idiots. eeek:

Because in the UK we have a lot of "Jobsworths" employed to enforce these regulations but in the EU on the whole they don't.
Also in the UK there seems to be a tendency to interpret EU rules and regulations in a different way to that of the "Continentals".

EG In wholesale butchery and abattoirs we have vets constantly checking work practices .... Lil Bruvver reports that many of these vets are Portuguese whose command of the English language seems to be limited to "No!" ... apparently they cannot get work in Portugal so they are over here enforcing EU regs and that's why so much of our food is more expensive than in their home country.

You wouldn't find a more bureaucratic country than France but as far as food hygiene is concerned ~ they just ignore it.

At one point, a few years ago, Italy was revealed to have only 3 Food Safety Officers in the whole country .... we have that many in each town hall.

It is, I suspect, that we are a far more litigious people than our EU partners.

Then why are we not fining or impounding the vehicles that don't have the right mirrors?

Same regs, but I know that in Italy there is a lot of "local interpretation" !

Because it is a difficult and time consuming process to chase down the fines. We cannot hold the drivers who simply vanish back to Poland or wherever whilst their employers (vehicle owners) happily sue for the return of their property + compensation in the sure and certain knowledge that our courts will uphold their Human Rights.

By litigious I meant as individuals we run to court every time we feel aggrieved whereas the Continentals shrug their shoulders and get on with life.

Drive without the correct headlamp deflectors, mirrors, reflective waistcoats, fire extinguishers etc in France and the fine is instant. Human Rights ~ they haven't heard of them. We don't give that power to our police..... But then drivers are more likely to pay up when the police officer is carrying a gun and they know that the second cop is sat in the car fingering his safety catch.

Same note, different tune, why are we still letting these foreign truck drivers come over here with full tanks of cheaper diesel with no futher costs to pay unless they go through the Dartford Tunnel/Bridge, M6 Toll road or inner London congestion charge?
These lucky bastards get away with virtually no contribution whilst US British sheeples pick up the tab...as usual. cussing:

The Swiss have the best plan imo. You enter the country and choose which lane to go through. The lane for those that haven't got the annual motorway user annual pass sticker on display in the windscreen and purchase it there and then for about £30, or the other lane for those that have it already.
If you try getting away with it and going through the green lane, and are pulled, you face an instant fine of about £100 plus the cost of the pass.
This method is fantastic imo. EVERYONE makes a smallish contribution regardless of how long they stay or how regulary they visit within the 12 months, without exception iirc.
This also frees up motorways from all those confuslicating and time wasting/que forming toll booths. Banghead
