Relax Apey, given that we men never read the instructions to anything there is a good chance that BM will run out of spare rotors before he manages to get it to fly any distance.  rubschin:
Or run out of fingers

The season is now over, no nubile youngsters in minimal attire for him to film. But plenty of grandmothers.  point:

Not exactly!  lol:

It all functions but you have to configure the PIDs (Proportional Integral Derivative) before it will fly properly... It is like a 'closed loop' system that enables the model to remain stable based on the feedback from the accelerometers and gyroscope...

It has been too windy/rainy to do it since I got it close to finished and the animals go mental if I fire it up indoors!  ;D

Quadcopter grounded Sundays and Wednesdays as it is hunting season - they'll shoot anything that moves!  scared2:

I had a number of crashes yesterday (including one in the neighbour's garden  redface:) while trying to fine tune the flight control board...  noooo:

Consequently, last night I changed the flight control software from Multiwii to Megapirate which should be simpler to tune and offers better GPS support...  Thumbs:

No....  noooo:

Bastard thing is that I crashed a couple of times yesterday and thought, "you should really order some spare parts before it breaks".... talk about tempting fate...  ::)

I think I've got the software sorted....

I was unhappy with the throttle response with the old software... I had to get to 50% before the motors started and at 100% it was a bit anaemic (but flying)...

So, with the new software I re-calibrated the speed controllers (ESCs)....

Started her up today (armed), opened the throttle and she zoomed to about a billionteen feet in the air at the point where the props would not have even started before...

I panicked, cut the power and watched it succumb to the irresistible power of gravity....  redface:

Bastard thing is that I crashed a couple of times yesterday and thought, "you should really order some spare parts before it breaks".... talk about tempting fate...  ::)

I think I've got the software sorted....

I was unhappy with the throttle response with the old software... I had to get to 50% before the motors started and at 100% it was a bit anaemic (but flying)...

So, with the new software I re-calibrated the speed controllers (ESCs)....

Started her up today (armed), opened the throttle and she zoomed to about a billionteen feet in the air at the point where the props would not have even started before...

I panicked, cut the power and watched it succumb to the irresistible power of gravity....  redface:

Quadcopter grounded Sundays and Wednesdays as it is hunting season - they'll shoot anything that moves!  scared2:

I had a number of crashes yesterday (including one in the neighbour's garden  redface:) while trying to fine tune the flight control board...  noooo:

Consequently, last night I changed the flight control software from Multiwii to Megapirate which should be simpler to tune and offers better GPS support...  Thumbs:

It will prolly chase Miss D around tho....  noooo:

Disaster struck the other day (hence my tears above)....

She was all ready to fly (I thought) with new software.... for the first time everything seemed to be working perfectly...

However, the motors would not arm - the motors default to 'unarmed' so they don't chop your arms off when you connect the battery if you have left the throttle half way...

You 'arm' the motors by putting throttle to zero and full right 'rudder' on the radio transmitter....

...but it didn't work.... I plugged it back into the flight planner (on my PC) and it said the motors could not arm as the compass needed re-calibration.

So, I went into calibration mode - the flight planner collects data for a minute from the compass while you turn the aircraft through all axis.... it can then calculate 'offsets' which are downloaded to the board...

...about 50 seconds into the process THE USB CONNECTOR BROKE OFF THE FLIGHT CONTROLLER!!!!  Banghead

So, it is basically fucked... I can't fly it without calibrating the compass....

The USB connector has teeny-tiny connections which make contact with the board - they are not soldered but the connector shroud  itself is soldered to the board....

I thought I could possibly hot-glue it back onto the board but (after getting boiling hot glue all over my fingers) while I can get a connection the PC will not reliably see it as connected...

I can connect by a FTDI (serial) port on the board but I needed a USB to FTDI converter which I don't have....

So, now waiting for a new flight controller and an FTDI to USB converter (belt and braces) to arrive through the impossibly slow Cyprus Post system...

OK...?

I doubt it....

I suppose it would be possible with the 'ready-to-fly' models but the build-it-yourself ones (like wot I have) come completely un-programmed....

One of the motors and one ESC is completely FUBAR (hence the flames)...

Flight controller and receiver worked after being dried out...

Three other motors worked okay...

Three other ESCs worked intermittently.... hoping that a night on the radiator will have sorted them out...

I had a spare motor and ESC so worse case scenario, I will need three new ESCs that I can probably buy here...

Then a full re-build.... ::)

Luckily I didn't have the camera and gimbal on it!  ;D

. . .

Then a full re-build.... ::)

Luckily I didn't have the camera and gimbal on it!  ;D

Oh fuck, am I allowed to say oh flying fuck?

Goes off to look up what an ESC is . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Thumbs:

An idea (serious) when you get it working again (and you will) is it worth getting some of that magic nano coating stuff you can get from Amazon to protect phones from water?

Or just don't be stupid enough to fly it next to the swimming pool again!  lol:

The results are in tho, two ESCs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_speed_control) are working fine this morning and the other somewhat intermittently....

So currently we are in a no fly scenario situation....  lol:

I've ordered some replacements.... I'm tempted to re-build as a hexacopter.....  rubschin:

Video Part #1

Bit of a slow start...

The camera gimbal starts up when power is applied but then I have to wait until it gets a GPS fix before takeoff....

No...

I was trimming it all up and had a hard landing which cracked the undercarriage....

I fixed it with my hot glue gun (owch!  redface:) fairly easily but realised that it was all a bit top heavy (hence the rather undignified falling over at the end of the first flight)...

So, I changed the undercarriage to a 'spider' type which is more stable....

I have also taken it all apart and fitted the flight controller to an anti-vibration mount to make it fly more smoothly....

Since then, it has been too windy like....  evil:

No...

After a complete re-build I need perfectly calm weather to trim it up...

Half calibrated....  redface:

It was calm one day last week so I took her out....

It was quite misty (sand in the air) so I couldn't see front from back very well...

To cut a long story short, it ended up at about a squillion feet high and going away from me... I couldn't even hear it! I couldn't cut the power as it would have landed behind a row of trees in a valley...

Luckily, I have programmed 'Return To Launch' as one of its flight modes... It takes a GPS fix before it takes off and so knows where 'home' is...  So I hit the RTL switch and she flew back, landed and shut down right next to me...  cloud9:

More practice required when i have finished my fiddling....

Quadcopter Hexacopter is fine.... :))

Just fallen off the radar a bit with other things I have been busy with...

Last action was to buy some sexy new carbon props as I believe the original cheapy props (no loss if they smash into trees, etc.) were too flexible... I have balanced half (3) of the new pops and need to finish the others before she takes to the air again...

I also lent the memory card out of the CopterCam to somebody to take to the UK... now returned...
