The Colston statue
« on: June 08, 2020, 06:15:46 PM »
I have seen that statue and discussed it with some Bristolians when I did a lot of work there years ago.

I am glad those protestors chucked it into the docks. The carncil should have had it removed years ago.  85000 branded and exported. 19000 dead and chucked in the Atlantic. No excuses.

Now it needs to go into a museum and the plinth left empty.

Legally the council couldn't

Some arse in a government department had made it a grade 2 listed building  https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1202137

Chuck them in the river too?

no matter how many instances of white swans we may have observed, this does not justify the conclusion that all swans are white.  (Karl Popper)

Just to be clear I deplore those Covid spreading protests that ironically will net kill (and black lives more than others), think some of the violent offenders should have been shot and think the likes of Raheem Sterling bleating inanities on twatter etc should be forcibly re-educated as to what the word 'only' means

But

That statue and especially the plaque under it was an icon of evil and I smiled at the sight of it being sunk

Sterling made a twat of himself. Apparently only 30% of overpaid footy players are black! According to today's figures only 3.3% of the UK population is black, so they are doing well. I suspect the Grade 2 listing is quite old and predates the more obvious  objections to the Colston statue.  Well, sort of. In 1977 they wrote:

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION The statue of Edward Colston is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * A handsome statue, erected in the late C19 to commemorate a late C17 figure; the resulting contrast of styles is handled with confidence * The statue is of particular historical interest, the subject being Edward Colston, Bristol's most famous philanthropist, now also noted for his involvement in the slave trade.

My last house and my current abode are also Grade 2 listed. In both cases the carncil has been told to fvck off about various essential matters like drains and telephone cables.
