Just chuck it out
« on: July 10, 2020, 12:58:12 PM »
Growing up I used to see my mum sewing, darning socks and so on and my dad fixing things around the house.

No longer!  Took a duvet and pillows to a laundry this morning to get them cleaned. It was cheaper to chuck them out and go out and buy new ones!

Realised that I have done this in recent years with pooters, washers, ovens and so on.

Seems our parents' generation was more environmentally friendly than we are  rubschin:

Stuff was more 'spensive then and we were poorer...  cry:

I remember my Dad repairing a pot (or kettle?  rubschin:) with a mahoosive soldering iron he had borrowed rather than buying new and Mum used to make all our clothes... She used to buy a big sheet of Sheepskin, draw around our hands and make mittens in the Winter...  redface:

When the telly went wonky (often) the man from Radio Rentals used to come and change a valve...

But yes, now you are right, if the wishdosher packs up it is cheaper to buy a new one (which is miles better) than get the repair man out or try and buy bits for it...

Darned socks were always sort of knobbly  rubschin:

A mate of mine was some sort of techy and went to work in East Africa (university). He could repair most things, but drew the line when he was asked to repair a light bulb!

In the 1960's they used to design electronics to be easy to repair, by the late 1990's they started to use that as an example of what not to do - better to design them not to go wrong and then design the manufacturing process so you didn't even need to test them before sale.

As for duvets - take them to a laundrette, they have bigger machines.  Well either that or stick them in the bath and jump up and down on them.  They'll take half a year to dry though so need to plan ahead.  Cheap end duvets from Argos aren't as good as the expensive ones.

Thinking about it Nigeria might have been safer than Slough
