Questions:
1) Why is it that if you add up all the early deaths that are claimed to be caused by various things (Smoking, Drinking, Weight, Pollution, Road Accidents caused by drink driving, Road Accidents caused by speeding etc etc) you arrive at a figure suggestive that everyone dies an early death. Sometimes more early deaths are claimed per annum than the total deaths that actually occur in a year.

2) At what age is a death considered normal? Surely, given the natural urge to hang on to life no matter what, any death must by definition seem early to the person doing the dying?

That is easy, all people who die on the roads are fat drunks who crashed as a result of a fit of coughing from road pollution, while lighting a fag.

600,000 people die each year in the UK

Cancers (26 different varieties) account for 134,362
Seasonal Flu accounts for 4,000
Heart Attacks account for 94,000
Other Cardio Vascular (excluding Strokes) account for 106,000
Murder accounts for 850
Suicide accounts for 5,500
Road Accidents account for 3,000
Stroke accounts for 67,000

Total 409,212

These figures are based on what is written on the death certificates and apply to 2007.

For example it is claimed that 106,000 people die of smoking related illnesses in the UK every year. (www.patient.co.uk)
But according to ASH the figure averages 160,000 a year

But these figures are arrived at not from the cause of death on the death certificate but by "statistical analysis" so if you have a heart attack and have ever smoked tobacco your eventual death from a heart attack will be attributed to "smoking related illness" whether having had a ciggy 50 years ago was the cause or not.

I once wound up some junior doctors by telling them that I had never smoked, nor had any of my family smoked but I did used to catch a bus to school and smoking was common place on the upper deck. They were happy once they had their prejudices confirmed.

If you die at 90 and smoked then smoking killed you.

The implication being the unlikely scenario that you would have lived much longer had you not smoked...

It is a farce.

Interestingly over 5000 deaths per annum are reckoned to be caused by incorrect prescription of drugs but very few death certificates are issued giving "Doctor's Error" as the cause of death.

Death caused by abuse of substances including illegal drugs is another major misconception. Very often these are blamed but the actual "cause of death" is given as heart failure or similar with no further explanation.

In short nobody knows so they just make it up.

As for giving up smoking ~ having done that I can confirm that it doesn't let you live longer but it certainly feels like it
