wireless card
« on: October 01, 2009, 02:23:09 PM »
Right I have a pc from work that I want to install wireless on. Where on earth can one buy a wireless card and how easy it to install into the pc.

I do have a mobile broadband dongle but it doesn't seem to be picking up the wireless signal although there is one in here as I am running my laptop off it. Low admittedly but there.

The mobile dongle doesn't pick up wireless networks, it connects via the mobile provider (Vodafone/Orange etc)

I use one of these on my old desktop and it works fine:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/BELKIN-CORPORATION-Wireless-USB-Adapter/dp/B000MIQ176/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254409051&sr=1-13

Not quite "plug and play" but the CD install disc does all the work.

PC World sell them as well as a Netgear model. I went for one of these as it was quick and easy, no taking the back off the PC.  Not that it's a difficult task anyway as others here are sure to tell you.

I was caught in a a bind over this some time ago (long time actually  redface:). Both my Macs needed 'Airport' cards and of course Apple no longer supplied them. I had to buy them off eBay at the going rate  noooo:

Using a wireless mobile dongle could prove expensive too as, if you do achieve a connection, you will probably be doing so via the mobile network and not your home internet. Could be a costly "error".
Home WiFi is included in your Broadband costs but a mobile dongle is charged separately and has download limits etc.
