Ok, boys 'n' girls, how d'you ripen avocados more quickly then? Is there a quick route? The ones I bought are rock hard.  rubschin:

The theory is that if you buy them with the stalk still attached (only half an inch or so) they will keep for some considerable time thus I would ensure that the stalk is fully removed and place the avocados with some bananas which are know to cause fruit to ripen quickly because of the gas they give off.

Once upon a time Mrs S#2 told me of a method of ripening hard avocados in the microwave but I have just asked her and she cannot now remember the setting or the time involved. (I have a feeling it was on defrost for a minute and then leave overnight but I'm probably wrong)

I guess it depends on when you want to eat them. We have given up buying them as they are always too hard these days, stay that way for weeks whether kept in or out of the fridge and then go straight from rock hard to black mush seemingly overnight. I dunno where one can buy decent avocados any more.

There is a theory that if you put them in a brown paper bag they ripen more quickly; seems strangely arcane and mysterious... I like the banana vapour idea though  rubschin:

Several internet sites recommend placing them in a brown paper bag with a banana or a tomato.

Ignoring the philistines  whistle:   I might have a go at that; I wonder if a jiffy bag would do  rubschin:

Prolly do the job ~ I 'spect it is the darkness rather than the brownness inside the bag and a nana or tommytoe should help but make sure you have pulled the stalk out ~ Got that tip from AWT.

"Place an avocado, a tomato and a banana in a brown paper bag and put in your trouser pocket.

Stand somewhere dark such as an alleyway or park at night.

When the magistrate releases you, the avocado should be ripe."

This site reckons the microwave does not ripen the avocado but will soften it by cooking it
