3,000 passports and visas stolen

Quote from: BBC Web Shite
Greater Manchester Police has launched an investigation into the theft of 3,000 blank passports and visas.

The documents were in a van which was targeted on 28 July.

The Foreign Office admitted a serious breach of security over the loss of the passports and visa stickers, which were being sent to embassies overseas.

They just announced that they will be unusable because of 'advanced security features'...  noooo:

Question: How many heads will roll over this 'serious breach of security'?

Given that the home office has had such stringent security checks made on the people who work in its offices that illegal immigrants have been given free reign in there something tells me that the 'security features' will have already been cracked and now they can sell the passports.

Hell even if they couldnt do anything with the passports the visa blanks would be worth a small fortune.

Labour's deputy leader, Harriet Harman, has defended government policies.

"I think that this is a robbery - a serious crime - and it will be being investigated. But I don't think that it necessarily shows a sloppy attitude. I think it's a crime which is a serious one and will be looked into and we hope obviously - that the police will be able to apprehend the offenders."

So you drive away from a secure printing site, checked out by the guards on the gate and you are heading for an RAF Base, where you will need to satisfy all sorts of security procedures to gain entry, carrying parcels that must at least be marked as "Diplomatic" mail and you decide that you cannot go further without a newspaper to read as you drive so you stop, leave both of the van doors open and wander off for a chat with Mr Patel. Two likely lads, having no idea what you are carrying, leap into the van through the open doors, intimidate your escort in the passenger seat and find, conveniently, that the keys are in the ignition and they drive off round the corner, unload all of the parcels into another vehicle and make good their getaway.

I think that if I were Greater Manchester Police I would have the thumbscrews on that driver by now. Talk about a classic put up job. I'm just amazed that the driver and his mate thought they would get away with it.

In my day I'd have had the driver hanging by his bollox answering probing questions within the hour.

Who wants to bet that these will be "found" following the "thorough police investigation" ?

A man is being questioned in connection with the theft of 3,000 blank passports and visas worth about £2.5m from a security van in Oldham.

It follows an attack on a security van driver after he stopped at a newsagents shop on 28 July.

The man arrested is understood to be the delivery man who accompanied the driver on his journey.

The Foreign Office has said there was a serious breach of security over the loss of the documents.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: "A 48-year-old man from Oldham was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and is currently in police custody."

The delivery man who accompanied the driver.

But he wasn't the one who stopped the van for a paper/snack was he. Which begs the question - did the driver stop there on every journey he took ?
