This is driving me nuts.
« on: May 22, 2007, 09:42:04 AM »
This is probably going to sound like a minor gripe but its bugging the hell out of me at the moment. I can't play DVD's on my PC any more but the software I use to convert my DVD collection so that I can watch them on my PDA when I'm travelling shows them in the preview screen.

Surely it should be a simple thing, if pqdvd can show the film as its converting then why the hell cant media player powerdvd or nero. I've reinstalled directX, graphics drivers, have gone through every single codec pack I can find, hell I've even reinstalled Windows twice and all that happens is that the player will look at the DVD, freeze, fart and fall over.  Banghead

XP SP2, there is no way in hell I'd even consider touching vista for at least another 6 months. I'm letting all the muppets who bought it up in the initial frenzy pay to beta test it for me  whistle:

What if you tried loading WinDVD?

Also, have you checked the Event Viewer? It can be your best friend in such situations?

Media player, WinDVD, PowerDVD, Nero Home Cinema, TCPMP desktop version and Realplayer.

The events log indicates a problem with the codecs but I've gone through god knows how many codec packs starting with the one I had installed before I upgraded my machine which initially worked.

What if you remove all the codecs in Device Manager?

Then it farts, falls over and reboots itself.

I'm starting to think its something to do with my graphics card, I'm planning on ordering an upgrade when I get paid anyway so I'll see if that has any effect.

That was my next suggestion?

Even if you have a cheap VGA card or something ? replace your current card with it and let the system sort out the drivers.

Then put the other card back ? might well fix it.  happy088

Hardly Darwin, but if I'm on the train (or in the office when I have the place to myself  whistle: ) its far easier to have half a dozen memory cards wih a decent collection of films on than to get a portable dvd player and lug that and the DVD's round.

I tried that, but each time I'd get interrupted by someone who wanted to talk. Watching a film with my headphones on seems to say sod off to everyone.  eyes:
