Illustrated edition. Quite rare now, but you can find a stray copy in some shops (W.h. Smith's are the best).

I could spend hours curled up with this.

I'd recommend 'Tugs of the World' Fourth Edition. No pictures but a wealth of information:

Growing up next to the Solent I could name a few for you.
I remember Hengist and Horsa .... they were the Southampton to Hythe ferries, converted tugs. The Police Launch was named after the last Chief Constable of the old Southampton Force before it merged with Hampshire. His name will come to me in time.
There were three tugs that sailed out of Poole but often came into the Solent ~ they were Wendy Ann 1, Wendy Ann 2 and Wendy Ann 3. Same family owned all three as I recall.
