They do get in the oddest places. Thugboy Cat here scoops books off a high bookshelf and sleeps on the shelf rather than in his comfy bed  rubschin:

As for the shrew yes but at least it got a chance.  It's surprising though how some animals do survive. Often an issue with cat inflicted injuries is internal bleeding or infection.
