But I have a book called Sky Call (?) that I bought some *thinks* 35+ years ago when I was jumping every week which shows this happening...

Back then they had 'balloon suits' rather than wing suits that inflated after leaving the aircraft. They didn't have as much lift or control as the modern wing suits but the introduction of turbine powered aircraft to sky diving meant that the plane they jumped out of could dive vertically without over cooling the engine and the jumpers could 'fly' back into the plane 10,000 feet lower than they left it...
