I have tried Barman - although I can't seem to get AVG to talk to me at the moment.  Switched off Windows Forewall to no avail.

Perhaps I need to update AVG - I'll downloa ... Oh!

Can't you delete the whole thing...?

Good point - I will try an uninstall this evening.

[rambling mode] I'm thinking you've got a cheap and nasty modem/router from your new ISP that can't arbitrate between more than 2 wireless connections.  Like the one those sods from el cheapo ISP gave me.  But then you shouldn't be able to see the modem/router and it shouldn't have been able to give it that IP address.  [/rambling mode]

What happens if you connect said rejected laptop via an ethernet cable to router?

Works fine on ethernet cable.

What wireless mode is the router set to - BGN, etc.?

Um - how would I know what mode the router is set to?   rubschin:

I just got it out the box, plugged it in and followed the very limited instructions.

Find the IP address of the router - it will be 192.168.something.something

Type that into the address bar on your browser and you should have access to the router....

Can't you just phone the helpline of the new provider and get them to sort it......or have I missed something?

Tried a couple of days ago and gave up after 15 minutes on hold.

I think it's an issue with the laptop rather than the provider.

They normally have some 'expert' who can talk you through the whole problem though. Give it a try.  Thumbs:

Sure?  If it works fine on ethernet and on wireless to other providers there is something awry with that modem and it's wirelessability.  What happens if you try and see which laptops can see each other over the home wireless network?

Also can you reset the modem - so that it forgets all the connections it has made to the other laptops and then try rebuilding it's list by powering up the blanked out laptop first.  That'd show if it's a 3 is a crowd issue

And there's also the trick of forcing a new IP address for the laptop.  Open a command prompt and enter ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew.

Or even better wait for wisdom of tel
Well, whatever, nevermind

Banghead Can't turn the wifi thingy on the laptop on now.   Banghead

The button is not functioning and I cannot find another way to turn it on.

I managed to uninstall AVG and can turn off Windows Firewall, but now cannot test BM's suggestion.
