I cant believe that this guy is still on full salary. Police officers should be set a higher standard as tey are meant to be the protectors of the public.

A police officer convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage boy is still being paid a full salary.
Det Con Peter Cooper, 58, sexually assaulted a 14 year old during his time as an army cadet instructor in the 1980s.

West Midlands Police said the policeman, assigned to the family protection unit, would remain on full pay until sentenced.

The officer is suspended and will appear before a misconduct panel.

'Thorough investigation'

Cooper, who has been with West Midlands Police for 32 years, was convicted at Stafford Crown Court of serious sexual assault and indently assaulting the boy last month. He was cleared on five other counts.l

He was with the family protection unit from 2002 until 2005.

Deputy Chief Constable Phil Gormley said when complaints are made a thorough investigation is carried out.

"This investigation has been conducted in that manner, resulting in a conviction for Peter Cooper, and we are clearly disappointed this officer has failed to uphold the high standards of West Midlands Police.

"The officer will remain suspended and will appear before a misconduct panel which will take place later this month, it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

A date for sentencing has not yet been set.

Suspended? Misconduct panel? He has been CONVICTED of a serious sexual assault and even had the temerity to work in the family protection unit, how can you be sure he didnt abuse that position?  Forget suspension, fire him immediately and scrap his pension.
