Title: The All New Question Time Thread
Post by: Barman on March 28, 2009, 05:37:35 AM
I thought we had one of these already but I can't find it... noooo:
Did anybody see it this week...? What a disgusting, fat ugly trougher that Eric Pickles is - Chairman of the Conservative party FFS! Ye gods... noooo:
Lives 37 miles from the House of Commons and justifies a second home allowance because he 'has to be there on time... '
Eric Pickles >>> Fuck right off! cussing:
Quote from: Question Time
Transcript:
David Dimbleby began by asking Mr Pickles if he claims for a second home
EP: “I do indeed have a two house system and an allowance. But if I could just make a brief contribution
DD; “How far away from Westminster are you?”
EP: “Thirty seven miles.”[Boos from the audience]
EP: “And if I could just make this brief contribution to hang an MP week -
DD: “Take your time! Take your time!”
EP: “OK, then let me explain why. And I have actually had experience of commuting that distance, when my wife was ill (she’s fully recovered now) – but for a month I did it. And it was an extremely difficult experience and I’ll explain why. Because the House of Commons works on clockwork: you have to be there, if you’re on a committee, you have to be there precisely. Particularly for someone like me, I was a number two –“[Boos from the audience]
EP: “Let me explain, let me explain, please just let me explain for a moment. I had to be there –
DD: “Like a job, in other words?”[applause and laughter from audience]
EP: “Yes exactly like a job. If you’re number two in the opposition, you’re essentially running the committee. So I needed to be there at 930 to move those amendments. It doesn’t matter if a Liberal Democrat isn’t there, but it matters if I’m there
Ed Davey: “That’s just cheap”
EP: “When I was doing this, I was leaving home at five thirty in the morning to guarantee that I was there and I wasn’t getting back until twelve or one in the morning. Now you can do that once or twice, you can do that for a while. But you’ve got to understand, the House of Commons runs like clockwork.”
Caroline Lucas: “So does the rest of the world, Eric.”
EP: “And I have never, ever claimed my full allowance. I have always claimed the amount –“[jeers from audience]
EP: “Well I mean, I publish them. I’ve always published them on my website. They’ve always been there for people to see. I have always been accountable.
And I can tell you, I think the things are going to come out in a week’s time. I think I’ve only claimed about sixty percent of the allowance, it might even be fifty five percent.
But I’m a serious guy who will put in the hours. And I will work for those hours. But I can tell you this: it is no fun doing five thirty in the morning right the way through.
You cannot be sat on a train thinking ‘am I going to make it? Am I not going to make it?’ That’s why I do it.”
Audience Member: “Do you think Fred Goodwin should give some of his pension back Eric?”
EP: “Yeah, I do.”
Audience Member: “Right - that’s because he’s behaved immorally, unreasonably perhaps. But he’s played within the rules! Don’t you think that’s a bit hypocritical?”
EP: “I had my flat – I bought my flat when we regularly sitting until two in the morning. I bought my flat when we did that. I bought that flat because it turned out –
[Audience member: “sell it!”]
EP: “OK well I’ll sell it. Of course I could sell it. I am never going to be able to satisfy you folks, at all, because I am an MP and therefore guilty.”

Agreed!
After that I watched This Week which for some reason I find entertaining. It was good to see Diane Abbot ( sick2:) squirming under the clearly intelligent gaze of Constance Briscoe...
I've just watched last weeks QT on iPlayer. It was quite easy to guess it was from Brighton!
From the big sign that said 'Brighton' in front of the panel...? rubschin:
No. The number of those "good with colours" in the audience.
And the panel... lol:

I was amused by the semi pantomime reaction of the audience when they were told that Nick Griffin will be on the panel when they are in London in a couple of weeks.

Frightening tho how many of the audience are still ardent labour supporters... I mean, you wouldn't necessarily expect them to vote for the Tories but to still be backing labour... noooo:

Quote from: BBC Web Shite
Anti-fascist campaigners are staging a mass protest at BBC Television Centre as British National Party leader Nick Griffin takes part in Question Time.
There are several hundred protesters outside the building, although it is calmer than earlier when about 25 broke through police lines into the BBC.
These guys really can't see the irony of their actions can they...? happy001

Dimbleby: "Good evening. I'd like to welcome our panel tonight. Well, all of them bar one of course" [audience laughs nervously] Griffin: "I .." [audience boos, ecstatically] Dimblebore: "That's really quite enough from you, Mr Griffin" [enthusiastic applause. Cries of 'quite right'] Dumbledore: "First, I must just apologise for the screaming and breaking glass you may be able to hear. I'm told that the UAF have peacefully stormed the building and are now peacefully smashing the place up". Dumbledore: "and so, to our first question. Gentlemen with the cross face.." Angry Asian: "Nick. Is it that you love Churchill and hate Muslims, innit?" [applause] Nick Griffin: "I didn't.." Baroness Wassup [interrupting]: "Yes, you do, don't you, you do" [prolonged applause] Dumbledore: "Moving on now. I've got photos' Mr Griffin, of you standing near a man from the Klu Klux Klan. Does the very existence of these photo's not prove, beyond doubt, that you'd very much like to strap a black man to the front of your pickup and drive all round the bayou at high speed?" Nick Griffin: "Well, I.." Bonnie Greer [interrupting]: "Don't you try to tell me about no KKK. I'm American."

More than a fifth of voters would consider backing the British National Party in a future election, according to an opinion poll taken in the hours after leader Nick Griffin's appearance on BBC1's Question Time. Some 22% of those questioned said they would "seriously consider" voting BNP in a local, European or general election - including 4% who said they would "definitely" consider backing the party, 3% who would "probably" consider it, and 15% who said they were "possible" BNP voters.
You can probably add another 10-20% that are too scared to admit it too. They must be saying something that appeals. rubschin:

[Johnathan Dimbleby] "Our next question is from Nick"
I've submitted me main question and have a nice supplementary one lined up . . .
What could possibly go wrong . . .
Venue is Eastleigh with Paul Nuttall, Diane Abbott, Tim Farron, Esther McVey and Amol Rajan (editor of the Independent to save you googling)
Could be interesting . . .
Translation: I've suckered the BBC with a fake question and am ready to let rip if I have the opportunity... eveilgrin:
Esther McVey is a complete waste of space, all of her 'money saving' gimmicks for getting more people into work are a joke in the main. All it really needs is to allow Jobcentre staff to actually help claimants look for work again instead of just ticking boxes when they sign on. Outsourcing that side of things to external agencies and only making them available after 6 months of claiming is bloody ludicrous.

Currently jobcentre staff (at least the ones I know down here) are no longer allowed to do job searches for clients when they sign on, they it's now just a conveyer belt: sit them down, see the evidence, have them sign and send them off and it looks like HMRC are likely to be taking over that part in the near future. The in house job points clients used to be able to use have also been removed and clients are now forced to log into the abortion that is universal jobmatch daily in order to keep claiming benefits. Once a claimant has been signing for 6 months they are passed on to one of the agencies that have taken over all of the support roles that the jobcentre used to have,

It just feels like a complete lack of joined up thinking here, it makes more sense to have the support available from day one as that give the client a much better chance of finding work quickly not to mention that keeping it in house rather than outsourcing would most likely save money, given the government's track record.

In all honesty it's not going to matter who becomes leader this time around, I can't see them being electable for at least the next couple of elections. noooo:

Aye, they'd need to have a real shake-n-vac and drop the identity politics... noooo:

A week is a long time in politics, 4 years is a lifetime. Labour were supposed to be destroyed after that 1992 failure but what happened next was the Tories pressed the self destruct button and frankly they're not short of ones to press this time.

True but Labour would have to rebuild themselves from the ground up and have a convincing leadership candidate that will appeal to both the left and the moderates who felt betrayed by the Corbyn era. Whatever else we may say about Blair, in the early days he was able to sell himself as being the hope of the party and was able to make it electable again. John Smith would have been able to do the same before his tragic end but look at the available choices now and it's clear they don't have a clue in how to lead them out of the wilderness.

If Boris gets the economy or Brexit or the BBC wrong (and the worrying signs are already there) then even a left wing nutter like Long Bailey becomes electable
Voters are fickle, by 2024 we'll have had what most will see as 14 years of Tory rule, no party has made it to 19 in living memory which is what another Tory win would mean

Possibly, or we could see the rise of the smaller parties previously seen as being on the fringe. To be honest my biggest concern over Labour is that they end up with something similar to the Bloomberg situation happening with the Democrats at the moment as given their massively reduced resources they are potentially an easy target.
