Title: Annual rant. Clocks
Post by: GROWLER on October 23, 2008, 09:13:44 AM
I can't help myself, sorry, but I despair at this time of the year, I really do.
I'm not alone though.
The S.A.D season is upon us yet again.  sad32:

Why won't the leave the bloody clocks alone?
If the jocks and cows desire it so much, then let them have it, but the rest of us want every available minute of daylight that we can possibly gleen from this already miserable enough rancid rip off country of ours surely?

There's always one exception though mind. ::)

Mrs GROWLER. Banghead

She reckons it creates a nice cosy warm atmosphere, closing the door in the evening listening to the rain battering against the windows. confused:

I suggest she been reading far too many Boodle and Dunthorpe books, and besides, GROWLER towers will not be a warm and cosy residence this winter, as I've disconnected the bastard thieving gas fire and c/h system, and placed wooly jumpers and blankets in every room as a replacement.  eveilgrin:

There is the same amount of daylight only it's at the time of day when honest working folk are about their toil.

I understood what you wrote just not what you meant you mud-plugging, seat stitcher.  ;)

The number of minutes of daylight available is the same after the clocks go back as before.

Some of us see every available minute regardless of the clock.

If you came home from the pub/wheel-nicking trips earlier you could get up and enjoy the day from dawn to dusk.   cloud9:

When in Security Management I had extreme difficulty every clock change time, particularly with our tinted cousins, explaining that because the clock go backward whilst they are on night shift we would not pay them an additional hour ~ likewise when the clocks go forward we did not deduct an hour's pay.  Banghead

So there. Told you I wasn't alone. razz:

Up to 80,000 jobs could be created in the tourism and leisure industries if clocks were not turned back an hour every October, a new report claims.

The Policy Studies Institute report said £3 billion could be generated each year in the sectors, while fuel consumption in factories would be cut if there was an extra hour of daylight in the winter months.

Tourist activity would increase by up to 4%, creating between 60,000 and 80,000 jobs, according to the report's author, Dr Mayer Hillman.

The report, published ahead of this weekend's time change, said darker evenings brought increased demand for lighting and central heating.

The study was supported by the British Association of Leisure Parks Piers and Attractions (including GROWLER)  and the Tourism Alliance as a "bold but simple" way of boosting the economy.

I'm going to start a petition.

Why would they need an extra 80,000 people on November 1st if the clocks didn't go back...?  rubschin:

Because, most tourist attractions don't open until after 9:00, and during the summer many close at dusk for H&S reasons, meaning 3-4 pm in mid December, but 4-5 pm if they left the ruddy clocks alone, thus creating more working hours in the week requiring more staff and rotation.

I'll have to close my business at 3 pm on dreary dark December afternoons, as it can't be run in the dark, and I'm damned sure punters aren't going to arrive at 8:30 am to take advantage of the lighter mornings. noooo:
Hence, I personally could do more work and earn more if they stopped fannying around. cussing:

There.
E mail sent today. We'll wait and see if they reply. rubschin:

Dear Sir/Madam,

With reference to you recent report regarding the argument for the retention of B.S.T.

Whilst being totally in favour of leaving the clocks alone and supporting any campaign to retain BST all year 'round, it has to be  questioned as to how you actually arrived at the figures you have obtained?

Up to 80,000 jobs could be created in the tourism and leisure industries if clocks were not turned back an hour every October, a new report claims.

How did you come to this conclusion?

The Policy Studies Institute report said £3 billion could be generated each year in the sectors, while fuel consumption in factories would be cut if there was an extra hour of daylight in the winter months.

I can see quite clearly and agree vehemently regarding the reduction of the  nationwide fuel consumption that this government is continuously demanding from the great weary British public, as the vast majority of business's start up at 9:00 am or later, and would in fact gain an hour of daylight in the afternoons during working hours. However I'm intrigued and interested as to where exactly the extra 80,000 jobs and  the extra £3 billion of generated income will be coming from?

A full and comprehensive detailed explanation would be most welcome to further my arguments against the cynics that I regularly speak to, who are doubting your facts and figures.
I therefore look forward to receiving your prompt reply to further my vocal support for the case against GMT,

Yours faithfully,

Growler, My Time

Problem with that is that we will still have to go through the ritual twice a year.

Why can't they just pick a time and stick to it all year?

If necessary change the hours that people go to work and children go to school.

As for farmers .... with modern farming they work all bloody hours, when they feel like it, using spotlights as bright as bloody searchlights to enable them to plough/harvest or whatever through the fecking night! We often have them in the fields round here until one in the morning! They were at it last evening until gone ten, 5 tractors up and down the village hauling trailers of God knows what.

Do you ever wonder why you have to spend half of this morning resetting every electronic device in your home? And why tomorrow you’ll struggle to get to work on time, bleary from dragging yourself out of bed an hour early?

I expect not. If you did, you’d find that the whole thing was invented by a beetle-hunter called George Hudson, who was annoyed that shift-work kept him from pursuing his hobby in the evenings; oh and it was also championed by a property developer called William Willett who was annoyed by the way dusk fell while he was playing golf. The House of Commons repeatedly rejected it as a silly idea. Eventually, in a moment of madness, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany adopted it, and the rest is history.

There’s no such thing as ‘Daylight Saving’. The amount of light stays the same whatever happens. The whole thing is completely pointless, yet  we just keep doing it.

Sorted about 11pm.  This is the daftest clock we ever bought.  It it was always an hour fast because some uberprat in WMF didn't realise that we're not all on 3rd Reich time.  So did we take the offer of our money back?   noooo:    Should have but it matched all the other stuff so (not quite so) clever clogs decided to dismantle it and sort it.  Engineers eh  ::)

One hour less?

Either way cutbacks will be needed in other areas.  Chocolate time has to be preserved (as does all food and drink time.)

I'd suggest an hour less of taking the piss out of each other but come on Steve get real.

Well we could reject the imperialism of Greenwich and have Bickering Standard Time.   All the clocks go back an hour each Saturday so we all have more chocolate and booze time.  And then Friday mornings the clocks go forward an hour at 11 so less work time.

Too many clocks equates to confusion - I hope they all have the same time displayed.

My stepdad used to collect clocks and there were loads of the noisy things. All set to different variations of the real time so that you could hear the quarter , half hour and hourly chimes, dings and dongs!!!!

Used to drive me insane. All had to be set to silent for when I visited  lol:

Not too bad here.

Phone automatically done

Fitbit automatically done  lol:

Living room and oven clock are all that needs adjusting.

Microwave is only turned on when in use to avoid the annoying clock situation.

So we are all primed for the bi-annual race.  Can we get all clocks, watches etc set to BST before the highly expensive radio powered kitchen clock finally decides it'll get round to it (can take a day or two)

We've never won yet

Not so much to do in t' new place...  cloud9:

Did you do a page on how to reset them all in your guide for the tenants; and placed post-its on each one for ease of identification  ;)

- clock on photoframe in lounge
- clock on photoframe in dining room
- clock in front of TV
- clock on weather station 1
- clock underneath the weather station
- clock on the time/tide/moon triple clock
- the other clock in her 4x4 that doesn't link to GPS time
- the clock on my Merc Nutter that may or may not
- clock on the Tom Tom in her car (yes it should auto adjust but it don't)
- clock on the Tom Tom in my car (ditto)
- clock on the answering machine
- my main alarm clock
- her main alarm clock
- my just in case battery alarm clock
- her just in case battery alarm clock
- clock in the main guest room
- clock on the cooker
- clock on the microwave
- the cuckoo clock
- the outside clock

And probably others  Banghead

Microwave is likely to not get set

Only use the clocks on the photo frames as they turn on and off and predetermined time

But have remembered two more clocks

- Shower radio clock
- Timer for the pond lights

Radio signal from Frankfurt still hasn't got through to the German made radio controlled kitchen clock.  Don't ever buy a WMF radio controlled clock

Really?

Maybe I've got too many clocks

So far done
- wrist watch
- bedside clock radios (2)
- shower clock
- shower radio

Still to do
- the battery alarm clocks (2)
- the 2 clocks that don't auto update in the cars
- clock by the TV
- the clock behind me right now
- garden clock

Can't be arsed to do
- clock for garden lights
- the cuckoo clock (well it's bust anyway)
- the two photo frames
- loads of ones I can't remember

Meantime the auto kitchen clock is stil waiting for Hamburg radio signal  evil:

My body clock hasn't changed either. You know when you have to get up in the night to use the loo (definitely an age thing) and you see the time says 0527hrs and you think sod that, I'll have another hour in bed? Well this morning it said 0627hrs, and I thought hardly worth getting back in bed; so I came down, made a coffee, switched the laptop and telly on, and it said 0538hrs  cussing: cussing:

Well I've done 5 manually and let 4 do themselves automatically - I think the car does itself.  The kitchen clock is still waiting for the signal from Hamburg.  I can already think of 3 more I still have to do manually.
