Coming from that far behind it seems most unlikely  noooo:

Such a double punishment was over the top IMHO, the team and fans already knew they were dropping out of the championship but to then make them start the season on -10 points before a ball was kicked is virtually insurmountable. It wasn't the the team or the fans that caused the financial problems, it was that twat of a crooked MD. You only have to look at the smirking sod to want to strangle him

Well the Saints are mid table. Made up the deficit imposed by the FA, without which they would have been fighting for a play-off place, and are steaming through the table. I look forward to 2010 with new hope. Can't see us going up this season tho' as it is still too big a deficit to make up.

ah ha!

1976: the Cup Final year

Southampton faced Football League First Division Manchester United in the final. Stokes scored the only goal of the game, placing his shot accurately into the corner of the net past Alex Stepney in the United goal. Initial thoughts were that he was offside but replays show that he was not. The result remains Saints' highest success as a club. He won a new car for scoring the first goal in the cup final; he had apparently started taking driving lessons prior to the final, fully expecting to win the vehicle.

I still reckon he was off side but frankly it matters not ... we won the bloody thing and that was all that counted.

Did you know that we had also been runners-up twice?

Good winning answer in a pub quiz.
1900 beaten by Bury 4 - 0
1902 beaten by Sheffield United 2-1 in a replay

Then, of course, we were also-rans in 2003 when we were beaten by Arsenal 1- 0 in Cardiff (Wembley being out of commission at the time).

Saints draw and West Ham win by four or more goals, West Ham are promoted.

If Saints draw and West Ham win by three goals, it goes to goals scored (currently Southampton 81, West Ham 79).

If clubs finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored, it goes to head-to-head records between the two teams andSouthampton would be promoted courtesy of a 1-0 win (in October) and 1-1 draw (in February) between the sides.

If Saints draw and West Ham win by one or two goals, Southampton are promoted.

All clear then........... rubschin:

I suspect the answer is to do with Lawrie McMenemy 's first sentence

Quote
Former Southampton manager and vice-president of the League Managers' Association  Lawrie McMenemy believes Adkins has been treated harshly.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "Well I am shocked. I said right from the start that to finish fourth bottom in the first season in the Premier League is success. "The ambition this year is to stay in the Premier League and they look set for that, not many teams will go to Chelsea and get a draw.
"With due respect to Pochettino, what does he know about our game? What does he know about the Premier League?
"What does he know about the dressing room, does he speak English?
"Everybody will be feeling sorry for Nigel Adkins. I don't think he'll have a problem getting another appointment."

Chairman - Well Nigel, do you reckon you can get us right up the table next season so we can get into European trophy matches
Nigel - Oh, I think you're being ambitious there Chairman

Chairman to Pochettino - Do you think you can get us right up the table next season so we can get into European trophy matches
Pochettino - Oh yes (In Spanish)  Banghead  Banghead  Banghead

yup. so I heard.

I mean, if Reina hadn't been just strolling around last week like an 'arf baked plank, instead of doing what he's paid gazzilions to do, i'e., defend the goalmouth, then that'd  probably have been a loss to Citeh too. evil:

That'd be my team then, we've heard worse.  Best result for you today is nil nil with 4 players sent off each side and both managers and several underage girls found in the changing rooms

Don't like tempting fate but it is now mathematically impossible for QPR to win PL now so the above outrage is at least more likely than that

"Southampton's two big summer signings both start - midfielder Victor Wanyama, the £12.5m club record buy from Celtic, and defender Dejan Lovren from Lyon. The Saints, who also start with England goalscorer Rickie Lambert, include three 18-year-olds in the side - Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and James Ward-Prowse.

Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese has resigned, with owner Katharina Liebherr installing herself as his replacement.
Cortese tendered his formal resignation in the autumn and has since served the notice period on his contract.
Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino said last season he would leave if the 45-year-old Italian departed.
