Title: Leicester City football club.
Post by: TG on September 20, 2007, 06:05:52 PM
This will be a lonely thread I imagine but to hell with it.

Being a Leicester fan is a frigging nightmare. Always has been, always will.

I do not go to matches. not because I don't want to but simply because it's too expensive. So I am limited to listening on local radio, watching them on TV (very rare i can assure you) or on the internet.

My spirits were lifted on Tuesday night however when a remarkable event occurred.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/nottm_forest/7001796.stm

A real, honest to god bit of genuine sportmanship. And against Forest who are bitter rivals.

Not only that but our latest manager (the 2nd of many this season methinks) used to manage Forest and is blamed by many for getting them relegated ( point:) so that made it all the more remarkable.

Not only that but we came back and beat the tree shaggers 3-2.  cloud9:

I took an interest in this because the player who had the heart attack is of course a Sunderland player who is out on loan.

Great piece of sportsmanship, pity these overpaid tossers at some premier league clubs wont behave in the same way

for the record I once admitted touching a ball in snooker.. whistle:

I too am deeply displeased: evil:
Quote
Southampton 2-3 Barnsley
Barnsley substitute Martin Devaney headed home an injury-time winner from close range.

Two free-kicks from Grant McCann had given the Tykes a two-goal lead before Marek Saganowski scored from close-range just before half-time.

Barnsley were reduced to 10-men when Dominik Werling was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Saints Inigo Idiakez thought he had grabbed a point from 12 yards in injury time until Devaney's late effort.

Very Early days but The Arsenal are opening a lead. Could this be their year now that "The Chosen One" has gone.

I was tempted to throw my DAB radio at the wall when they won it in the last minute.

Still to have the lead twice and get 3 goals at Chelsea when your in the state we are in isn't bad going.

An encouraging result I think.

I should tell you that Leicester are famous for getting cracking (sometimes giantkilling*) results then crashing and burning against minnows in the next match. Having said that, Colchester are not minnows in this division so you never know your luck.

* One day I'll tell you the hilarious (honest) story about the time I was in a Liverpool dive of a pub and and they got beat by Leicester when they were in the premiership. It was on the pub TV, i was on my own and I was pissed.

Ian Holloway is the latest candidate in the frame. Current manager of Plymouth. Not a bad appointment if it comes off.

Football aside, the bloke has some entertainment value in after match interviews etc.

Here are some of his pearls of wisdom I pinched from another site :

* "It's like the film Men in Black. I walk around in a black suit, white shirt and black tie where I've had to flash my white light every now and again to erase some memories, but I feel we've got hold of the galaxy now. It's in our hands."
- Holloway on QPR's financial situation.

* "It was lucky that the linesman wasn't stood in front of me as I would have poked him with a stick to make sure he was awake."
- Holloway states his opinion about the linesman's performance in a game against Bristol City.

* "I call us the Orange club - because our future's bright!"
- on QPR's potential.

* "He's been out for a year and Richard Langley is still six months away from being Richard Langley, and I could do with a fully fit Richard Langley."
- on midfielder Richard Langley's injury rehabilitation.

* "It's all very well having a great pianist playing but it's no good if you haven't got anyone to get the piano on the stage in the first place, otherwise the pianist would be standing there with no bloody piano to play."
- after being criticised for using defensive players in midfield.

* "I am a football manager. I can't see into the future. Last year I thought I was going to Cornwall on my holidays but I ended up going to Lyme Regis."
- asked whether QPR would be able to beat Manchester City.

* "To put it in gentleman's terms if you've been out for a night and you're looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they're good looking and some weeks they're not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She weren't the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let's have a coffee"
- on the "ugly" win against Chesterfield.

* "You can say that strikers are very much like postmen: they have to get in and out as quick as they can before the dog starts to have a go."

* "I always say that scoring goals is like driving a car. When the striker is going for goal, he's pushing down that accelerator, so the rest of the team has to come down off that clutch. If the clutch and the accelerator are down at the same time, then you are going to have an accident."

* "I've got to knock that horrible smell out of my boys, because they smell of complacency."

* "I have such bad luck at the moment that if I fell in a barrel of boobs I'd come out sucking my thumb."

* "Every dog has its day, and today is woof day! Today I just want to bark!"
- Holloway after securing promotion to the Championship.

* "When my wife first saw Marc for the first time, she said he was a fine specimen of a man. She says I have nothing to worry about, but I think she wants me to buy her a QPR shirt with his name on the back for Christmas."
- on QPR's new Danish striker Marc Nygaard.

* "Paul Furlong is my vintage Rolls Royce and he cost me nothing. We polish him, look after him, and I have him fine tuned by my mechanics. We take good care of him because we have to drive him every day, not just save him for weddings."
- on veteran striker Paul Furlong.

* "We need a big, ugly defender. If we had one of them we'd have dealt with County's first goal by taking out the ball, the player and the first three rows of seats in the stands."
- after a defeat against Notts County.

* "You never count your chickens before they hatch. I used to keep parakeets and I never counted every egg thinking I would get all eight birds. You just hoped they came out of the nest box looking all right. I'm like a swan at the moment. I look fine on top of the water but under the water my little legs are going mad."

* "There was a spell in the second half when I took my heart off my sleeve and put it in my mouth."

* "I don't see the problem with footballers taking their shirts off after scoring a goal? They enjoy it and the young ladies enjoy it too. I suppose thats one of the main reasons women come to football games, to see the young men take their shirts off. Of course they'd have to go and watch another game because my lads are as ugly as sin."
- Ian Holloway about the new rule restricting footballers from removing their shirts during a match.

* "Sometimes when you aim for the stars, you hit the moon."

* "I believe in what I am doing totally and once people speak to me they do too - I could sell snow to the Eskimos."

* "We've got a good squad and we're going to cut our cloth accordingly, but I think the cloth that we've got could make some good soup, if that makes any sense".
- Despite popular belief, Holloway was in fact misquoted as saying "soup" but actually said "suit".

* "I want to try and spread the support with my Bristol connection. Rovers are in the bottom division so why can't I try and convert some of them into Argyle fans? We're in the West Country so it's not that far away. Only two and a half hours away in a slow car, an hour and a half in a fast one - or 10 minutes in a rocket! As long as you aimed it right, you'd be down here really quickly. Don't land it on the pitch, though, because you'd ruin it!"

* " It was a bit cheeky wasn't it? But I don't think it was that bad. It would have been worse if he'd turned round and dropped the front of his shorts instead. I don't think there's anything wrong with a couple of butt cheeks personally. I think he's a funny lad and he was having a joke. I don't think he meant to offend anybody. If anybody's offended by seeing a backside, get real. Maybe they're just jealous that he's got a real nice tight one, with no cellulite or anything. I thought his bum cheeks looked very pert. If anybody's offended by that they ought to go and see the doctor. "
- on Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton mooning Everton fans

* " Hasney's bust his hooter. He can smell round corners now."
- on an injury sustained by central defender Hasney Aljofree

* "I couldn't be more chuffed if I were a badger at the start of the mating season"

* "When you're a manager it's a case of have suitcase will travel. And I certainly didn't want to travel with my trousers down."

* "I am not very happy at all, it is self-inflicted. What a complete chicken nugget with double barbecue sauce he is."
- after Paul Connolly is injured against Cardiff

* "I would like to say I saw Georges Santos' goal but I had to run off and go to the toilet, I saw Paul Furlong's goal, though. I reckon the ball was travelling at 400mph, and I bet it burned the keeper's eyebrows off."
- after his side's 2-0 win at Crewe

* "My wife says I'm only interested in three things and they all begin with F. Food, football and I can't repeat the last one."

* "David Moyes looks like Ronald McDonald, Martin Jol is a dead ringer for Shrek, Neil Warnock is Mrs Doubtfire and I'm Gollum."

At last nights press conference at the crisp bowl our man spake thusly:

"I am going to be so enthusiastic because I love everyday of my life. This is a whole new challenge, which throws me into a whole new ballpark. I feel like I have been acting in Coronation Street all my life and now I have been asked to do a different role."

Due to depression I have not posted in this thread for over a month.

Its been diabolical and no mistake, However, now the transfer window is open we have 6 new players (some of whom can speak English) and the manager put the lot on yesterday. The result a fine display and a 2-0 win over local rivals C******y.

There is hope yet.

Serious grudge match today. The football dynamo that is Plymouth Argyle. We poached their manager in November and they are not happy about it still.

Their chairman has started a war of words after 3 months and 3 days before the game. Git.

Should be an interesting match.

Anywho, I 'm glad I'm not a sheepshagger (derby) fan. Got hammered again so will be playing them next season with any luck.

mmm. You beat us in January and will get another chance in March. I imagine a lot of clubs are rubbing their hands together in anticipation of playing us at the moment.  point:

Five managers in a year, and 28 players bought in during the same time period means the present manager has inherited a hell of a mess.

Still, I remain hopeful. But if the mad Serb panics and sacks the manager that will fvck it well and truly.

Here we go again.......

....from the Telegraph.

Milan Mandaric is ready to risk further embarrassment to his tenure at Leicester City by removing his fifth manager in 12 months in a desperate attempt to protect the £25 million investment he made in the club a year ago.
The Serbian-American businessman is understood to have sounded out potential replacements for existing manager Ian Holloway, with former Derby County manager Billy Davies high on the list of possibles, just 17 games after installing the former Plymouth Argyle manager.

Defeat against Watford on Tuesday night, leaves Holloway with just four wins and staring at the relegation zone in the Championship and sources at the club insists that Mandaric is already running out of patience and that his working relationship with Holloway is suffering.

There are suggestions that Holloway offered his resignation recently, but was talked out of it by Mandaric, but with Leicester just two points above the bottom three Davies is now firmly on the club's radar and Mandaric could make a move this weekend, if Leicester fail to stop the slide against Norwich City. Davies was high on Mandaric's wanted list before Holloway was appointed, but the ex-Portsmouth chairman was unable to tempt him away from his former club Derby County. Mandaric completed a year in charge at the Walkers Stadium yesterday (Weds) and has admitted he has been shocked by the lack of progress.

"We are not even near where I wanted to be or where I planned to be. I gave my life to this club for the last 12 months, and millions of pounds, and I don't see as good progress as I wanted. But I have to keep working on it and surround myself with the people that will help me to get there and you have to look to the big picture."

Well, we are getting close to it now. Sunday is the big day. Southampton and Leicester have underacheived to exactly the same level with exactly the same number of games won, lost and drawn. We are on the same number of points as Snoopys lot but we have a small advantage in goal difference.

Snoops, if your lot get stuffed we are safe whatever our result. If they draw we must draw. If they win then we must win.

If god is in his heaven and I've done my sums right then the ideal result for me would be both teams plus Blackpool win and Cov****y lose in which case they go down.  cloud9:

Yeovil? WTF is Yeovil?

What happens next will be interesting. They still havent sacked the manager and they may not.

Rumour is that a new manager (Dowie) and possibly a new buyer for the club were lined up last week but the arse fell out of that at about 4pm on Sunday.

As for the mad serb he is making contradictory noises at present. Many seem to think he will sell up now his '3 year plan' is fcuked.

Anywho, next year might be fun. We might actually win 2 matches in a row.

Next year is LCFC's 125th anniversary.

To mark the occaision the present sponsors (Topps Tiles!  eeek:) have pulled out due to being skint and there is no longer a sponsor to put their names on the shirts.

So what? I hear you you mutter. Well, the chairman (mad Milan, very clean money) in his wisdom has declared that as a gesture of thanks to the fans they can pick the design on next years non-commercial shirt design.

The club has appointed someone or other to come up with four designs that the fans can choose from.

Now, I'm no graphic designer but i suspect the club has decided to save money on advertising agencies and given the job to someone's spotty oik of a nephew who has a passing familiarity with PaintShop Pro.

Ladieeeeeeeeeeeeeeees and gentlemen! Set your faces to stun. I present to you the four innovative, expressive designs for the next season.......

Banghead We are broke and rumour has it that Rupert Lowe (IMHO the cause of most of Southampton's woes) is making a cheapo bid for the club that has only recently ousted him. B@st@rd!!!!!

You'll find that 99% of Southampton fans agree with you Snoopy. I can't think of any other football chairman that is more despised by his own fans than him (and has been for some years). Mr Lowe said on the radio earlier this season that "it's because he's called Rupert and is middle class"

I have news for him. He is despised because he has taken a club with great traditions and broken it completely through sheer incompetence and an over inflated ego. That club was once proud of the length of service of its manager (Ted Bates who served the club for 66 years as player, coach, manager and director). It produced quality players (Terry Payne, Mick Channon, Matt Le Tissier to name but three who played for England as well) but Lowe forced the sale of the likes of Theo Walcott and Peter Crouch (Also England players) to enable him to continue to cover up the financial mess he had made. Great Managers like Gordon Strachan could not work with him. Even Lawrie McMenemy (Oh and thanks for that FA cup win Big Fella) felt compelled to resigned from the board in disgust at Lowe's antics.

This is an excerpt from the most recent AGM ~ it gives you a flavour of the problems at the club and they all point at Rupert Lowe who had recently returned after being forced out of the Chair two years earlier and of whom ex Southampton Manager Graeme Souness once remarked to reporters asking about the Chairman "You tell me of another man in football called Rupert"

Quote
Question from the Saints Trust: How much longer can we accept a tactically inept head coach?

Lowe: We appointed Jan at the beginning of the season because our young academy players have all been taught to play attacking 4- 3-3 football. He came in as part of a process where we looked at what was available. We’ve cut the squad substantially because we had to – nobody would like to see the club strengthen more than me. We are playing with a young team and have played some wonderful football. Leon is right and we have been bullied out of some games but we are in the same position as the latter part of last season when we had a group of highly paid individuals which has resulted in the financial situation now. I fail to see how anybody can say the football we are playing is unattractive. The results, you are not expecting to shoot the lights out to start with with young kids… The board’s job is top keep the situation under review…I think those young boys have achieved a lot and they need people’s support, not criticism. They have come up through the academy, they are Southampton players through and through and want to play for the club. Lawrie?

Lawrie McMenemy: With respect, to the club that is, I’m pleased you know my name – you must recognise me from the picture!

Lowe: Do you have a question?

McMenemy: That thing in my arms in the picture was called the FA Cup. I’m trying to ask you man to man to ditch your natural pomposity, arrogance and ignorance of football and listen…

Lowe: I stand up and face people. I don’t back off…

McMenemy: I don’t think you realise you’re talking down to people. You’ve got a room full of people, not shareholders but loyal supporters. The academy is just a new name for what we called the youth policy – you might have heard of Matt Le Tissier, Alan Shearer, the Wallace brothers, Steve Moran...You talked about the players sold in the last two years but you didn’t mention the players you sold in your time… They were sold for money that came in and there was £3.3m in the bank when you left but as I pointed out it was only money that was passing through like money for the radio station and insurance which were both losing fortunes and had to be got rid of… You didn’t mention Agustin Delgado, Kleber Chala and Jelle van Damme who were disasters financially to this club.In the ten years you had ten managers. Any business with ten managers is a failure. Your management is a failure.

Lowe: I’ve come back to sort out this situation…

McMenemy: I think Jan shouldn’t come here (to the meeting). He is a nice man, a football man, and I would never criticise him but he hasn’t got a cat in hell’s chance with you. Rupert, I’m sure you’ve got many strengths but not in football. You are not welcome here. When are you going to face the truth and resign?

Lowe: That’s very easy. I came back against the wishes of my wife to steady the club financially. I’m not going until I finish the job I came back to do – to try and restore Southampton to financial health. I might not achieve that. If you read the accounts that is an uphill task. It is disappointing to see so many people criticising somebody doing their best for the club. I’m not resigning.

Let's not forget this is the guy who brought Sir Clive Woodward into football (soccer) but after just a few weeks of seeing how Rupert liked things done at Southampton Sir Clive showed the sporting acumen that made him great and did a runner so fast that rumour has it he didn't even stop to pick up his briefcase.

And then there is this gem of reportage from the Daily Telegraph of 27th August 2004 ~ we knew then it was going tits up which is why he was ousted.

Quote
Congratulations are due to Rupert Lowe, the chairman of Southampton Football Club. Under his chairmanship since 1997, six managers – Graeme Souness, Dave Jones, Glenn Hoddle , Stuart Gray, Gordon Strachan and Paul Sturrock – have departed. But now he has what I believe he has always wanted. A head coach.

That title belongs to Steve Wigley. I have no reason to doubt either the ability or integrity of Wigley, but I can well imagine Lowe getting out of bed each morning and moving bare-footed into his bathroom quietly humming Sandie Shaw's Puppet on a String. Lowe is now as near as possible to being the manager. If not, then certainly the director of football. It is unlikely of course that he will ever carry either title because if results go badly he would have to dismiss himself. Far better for the axe to fall on someone else's neck. Be aware, Steve.

Rumours have abounded for several years as to Lowe's interference in football matters at the club. Football agents are not fools and direct contact with chairmen and chief executives, thereby cutting the manager out of the loop, is a well-known practice at some clubs. Some agents are past masters at feeding on the vanity of certain chairmen and the road to the Southampton offices is now a well-ridden route.

It is only fair to recognise the role Lowe has played in moving the Saints from their dilapidated former ground, The Dell, to the modern, upbeat Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium. But he has fallen into the trap, as have many of the new plc football people, of believing that their commercial and marketing acumen will also work in the dressing room.

They get a buzz from involving themselves in the players' world. They create a direct line from the dressing room and sometimes from the football staff room to themselves. This bypasses the manager and consequently undermines him.

Pictures of Lowe at Southampton's pre-season training, with his initials on his kit, show how the game has changed and is continuing to change in relation to the power of the money men and their own perception of what they think they know about the game.

Like agents, the press also know who will feed them. That is their job. For Lowe to accuse the media for being responsible for creating the negativity around Paul Sturrock shows he has a lot to learn or that he is simply naïve. Lowe should take a long hard look at himself, never mind offering that advice to others. He has contacts in the media and most people in the game know who they are.

Lowe protects himself well when managers leave him. In Sturrock's case, he has settled very quickly with no acrimony. I suspect there will be a confidentiality clause respected by both sides in the termination of Sturrock's contract and therefore the departure will always be announced as by mutual consent. But what is the cost to the club of these mutual consents?

My guess is that Sturrock will be relieved to be out of it. His reign at Southampton will not sit well on his CV, but when you have a chairman acting like the manager, you are bound to end up in disagreement on football issues. For a man coming out of the lower divisions trying to make his mark higher up, the least he should expect is full support from his chairman.

To be given the boot after two games this season, and only 13 in all, is disgraceful. To lose six managers in seven years takes some doing and I am certain that any City company who lose six chief executives in a similar period of time would be looking hard at the Chairman and Board of Directors.

For a club who over a period of 30 years had just two managers, in Ted Bates and Lawrie McMenemy, things have certainly changed. How long will Wigley last? Is Lowe already planning his next managerial appointment?

Rumours will undoubtedly abound, so I might as well start it off. Will he appoint someone that even his ego will be happy to play second fiddle to, simply in the knowledge that he had the courage to appoint him? Who might that be? Gerard Houllier? A Glenn Hoddle return? Can he tempt George Graham back into the game? What about Sir Clive Woodward?

What I do know is that Lowe sits on the Football Association's Main Board, the highest committee at the FA, and so we should have confidence in him to get it right, shouldn't we?

Frankly you only have to look at the twat's picture to see all you want to know.
Would you buy a used car from him? noooo:

Ah well. I just hope Cardiff beat Blackpool who are managed by Ian Holloway who led Leicester to the 3rd division for the first time in the clubs history.

I am content. They came up from a lower league and finished 5th plus just missed the premiership. I think few expected that.

The boys done good.

Mind you, I may send the bastards a bill for wear and tear on my kitchen lino as I paced up and down listening to the radio.

They have bought Kasper Schmeichel from Leeds for 1.2 million squids! Why the hell Leeds put up with him for so long I have no idea. When that twat was at Cardiff for a few months the locals very quickly named him 'Lurpak' (Danish 'Butter Fingers') for those who do not know what a useless idiot he is. Never even be within a mile of being close to his father.

Worth about 50 quid in my mind.

I'm hoping for the scousers (the red ones) next If they go through this afternoon.

Mrs TG (as has been noted elsewhere) is a scouser so there would be some cheerful chortling in our house when that match is on.

When I say 'chortling' I obviously mean savage violence.

Sorry been away for so long but she nicked my laptop and tried to sell it down at Cash Converters.

Nope  cry:

Leicester were good and United still don't understand that you do not attack with 8 or 9 players esp when you're already 3:1 up

Piss poor refereeing gave Leicester a chance they probably deserved and they grabbed it with both hands and United just got worse and worse.   Banghead

Leicester are more likely to get relegated than retain their Premier League title, according to the bookmakers.
William Hill are offering odds of 16-1 for the Foxes to go down and 25-1 for Claudio Ranieri's side to finish top again

BBC's summary of Arsenal's playing in the first half

Quote from: BBC
Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, OFFSIDE.
