How can a phone work without an antenna that sticks out?

The updates allow them to see how much you walk, eat, pee, sleep and breath. Also how many hours you sleep and when you do your washing or go to the supermarket.
All quite innocent an unobtrusive.

My new phone is all up and running - all my apps were wirelessly transferred across from my old one using SmartSwitch. The only slight annoyance was that I lost all the data on my "Shift Planner", so had to recreate this.
Other than that, so far so good. Even the earphones supplied seem pretty good

What's the half like of a smart phone for you? I buy them SIM free and run them into the ground after ~ 5 years which is prolly a mistake
The last one was/is great but I discovered in NZ that the GPS is a bit shite so we had to use LL's for navigation.
It isn't a problem generally but it was like a nagging sore and it had to go... Will sell it on-line.
The new one has super-fast GPS and also picks up GLONASS... oh and it has an IR blaster so I can control the telly from it too... lol:
Didn't know they were doing GLONASS phones now and a dual GPS/GLONASS one
In the garden it is using 16 satellites and giving /- 3m accuracy...
It's worth keeping an eye on the Chinese budget smartphones as in a lot of cases their manufacturers are sub companies or trading styles of larger established names. The last 2 phones I've had have been from Honor who are actually Huawei and they've both been brilliant. From what I've heard Samsung and LG do something similar but I haven't been able to find out which brands they use.

Hmm looks like I'm going to have to find another phone brand when it's upgrade time in a few months seeing as Honor are going to be buggered by the backlash against Huawei following the US trade ban over security concerns. Google have blocked them which means no more Android updates or access to the newer iterations. ARM have turned their back as well which means processors are now going to be a problem and now the SD Association and WiFi Alliance have also burned them.
Pity, it's been a damn good phone.

Well how long you got
I guess it's just courses for horses (or vice versa)
We don't use a lot of data hence the 29 G in the bank and 1.85G of my 2G month's allowance still there one week into the month. I just value the carefree 'I got data access if I need it'. Recent uses
- just did my occasional take Cobnut for a walk up the garden and read the newspapers on line - no WiFi at the top of our garden - Mrs K googles a restaurant for it's number and makes a spur of the moment booking for last night - Middle of a walk through some local woods yesterday and Mrs K doubts I know where we are (I wasn't actually THAT sure) so I shows her on that Sat view on google maps - and then there's the real time updated traffic info on the Sat Nags - I guess more of a need in Blighty

The only time I've needed to turn on Mobile Data to access/send anything in the past year or more was in Cape Town...
Of course the experience of others may vary, if you live on your phone and literally have to be connected to the Interwebs 86,400 seconds a day then you may need a plan that includes data... ::)
Ah, you have subscribed to the Padlock Pockets approach... whistle:
Why wouldn't I...? shrugs:

Of course it's a sign of he times that 6 year olds are now almost expected to have a phone. Was talking to a teacher at the weekend, her view is no issue as long as they do not use them in the classroom or for bullying and it's the camera that becomes the problem

Right into the early 70's, the Newbury area didn't have direct dialling. We had what looked like a normal "modern" phone but with no dial.
You lifted the handset and, after a few seconds, a lady said "Number Please".

Question
Vodafone says I am due for a phone upgrade (iPhone11) and I talked them into giving me a £5 a month tarriff reduction AND the new phone free of charge. It arrives tomorrow.
Can't be arsed to set up a new phone that I don't want, so thinking of flogging it online. How to do this and how much to ask (Flea Bay or other?)

You'd need to get it unlocked prolly (i.e. not tied to Vodafone) and it could be worth £450...?
Or just hold on to it until The Boy breaks his again... ::)

Interesting read thanks. But not a very smart idea.
Years ago in my TD role I got asked to invest a stack of the company's money into having our futuring offerings made out of such upgradeable physical objects. Was actually mainly supposed to address obsolescence, a real problem in aerospace electronics where customers want the 'same' computer to be deliverable 20 years after the first. I said 'nah' and we focussed on design objects instead.
Right in front of me right now is an example of why it doesn't work. Once upon a time we bought desktop PC's built out of a dumb motherboard with cards you plugged in and if you wanted a better graphics interface you just changed the graphics card. Remember PCI bus? Then someone realised it was smarter to put all that stuff on the motherboard and you got a much smaller and faster PC instead. For a while you could plug in better RAM and hard drive but not on this Surface PC.
Why Google didn't realise that is more than slightly bizarre

I can read my work emails on my own phone. Just received an email from work saying that the security on my current phone (Samsung Galaxy S8) isn't up to scratch any more. There will be no further security updates for this model.
Choice is an updated phone, or loss of access to work emails.
Upgrading/transferring everything across seems to be the only solution. Pretty sure last time I upgraded I used "Smart Switch" which, if memory serves, was pretty good.
Or just keep my current phone and not look at work emails, unless at work.

Or, like my son, get your company to provide one.

Some companies pretend they don't rely on key employees reading work emails out of office, others provide a work phone but lock them down so they won't allow you to read personal emails on them. Carrying two phones around is a right pain.
One possible option is to set a rule in your work email account that forwards to your personal email any received from certain people or with certain keywords in the subject. Then you get the heads up on your own phone of potential issues but can deny ever reading the work email.

Mr. Google should transfer everything for you...
Apart from WhatsApp - you have to take a backup of Chats to your Google account then re-install on the new phone...

Not gonna happen, we are "trying to save money" whilst happily spunking double pay on anyone, however useless, to come in on overtime. Senoir management can then proclaim they have sufficient headcount.

Everything fine except WhatsApps- as you predicted.

I had to go round the WhatsApp loop several times, moving it back and fourth between the old and new phones until it stuck... rubschin:
*Forth cloud9:
The chats have gone but all the pictures are still in the gallery and it is still doing stuff. Maybe they will come back, but it doesn't matter as they were all just puerile spaz jokes. Which are fine. Beautifully, all my particular swear phrases are copied across. so I don't have to retype "a bunch of utter cuntishness, peddled by the the fuckwittery of absolute mongtards who fail to see ther wankery of their spasticated dead-end ideas".
